With the housing boom development has taken its toll on its once tranquil surroundings. Small holdings have been replaced with complexes and shopping centers, streams flow with litter and sewage from the informal settlements and the harbor seals swim with oil coated plastic. Open grounds have been replaced with high walls, burglar bars and electrified fencing to protect property and human life due to rampant crime.

Tourists brochures show lush surroundings with prism beaches, dirt and the general decay is low key.

Due to the misappropriation of funds and apparent government red tape ( is it not strange that red tape never gets in the way for self enrichment) potholes are the cost saving alternative to speed bumps and they come with the added bonus of never needing maintenance.
