STEM CELLS

Testicles a new theory- Testicles could be a new source of stem cells, scientists say. The stem cells that make sperm can be taught to make other tissues, offering up a medical repair kit to sidestep morally charged debate over use of embryontic stem cells. Scientists have found a way to easily pick the cells out from other tissue in the testicles and grow them into batches big enough to use medically.

HIP STATS ON BREAST CANCER

Woman whose mothers have wide hips could be seven times more likely to develop breast cancer, researchers say. Daughters of woman with wide hips are 60 percent more likely than others to be diagnosed with breast cancer.

But the risk rises to more than seven fold if the mother carried them for the full 40 weeks of pregnancy, a study found. Researcher Professor David Barker said it could be explained by the effect of oestrogen. It is thought that high levels of the hormone cause dangerous changes to the immature breast tissue in the developing baby. The width of a womans hips is directly related to the amount of oestrogen she is producing.

D gets A for anti-ageing

A vitamin made when sunlight hits the skin could help slow the ageing of cells and tissues. A Kings’s College London study of more than 2000 woman found those with higher vitamin D levels showed fewer age-related changes in their DNA.

But the American Journal of clinical nutrition study stops short of proving cause and effect. A lack of vitamin D has already been linked to multiple Sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. The genetic material inside every cell has an inbuilt “clock” that counts down every time the cell reproduces itself.

The institute’s CEO, Professor Lawrence Dlamini, said graduates were delighted to be honoured at the event and the hall was packed to capacity.

‘Traditional health healers who have successfully completed numerous extensive training practices, like nursery development for plant propagation, conservation of nature and HIV/Aids management, graduated,’ he said.

Dlamini said that ‘recognition of prior learning certificates’ were handed out as well. He said as they are committed to sustainability and responsibility to nature, patients and the general public, the scope of this training multi-dimensionally empowers individual practitioners in their professional approach to traditional healing methods.

The annual ceremony was also attended by graduates from previous years and dignitaries from diverse institutions to welcome the new practitioners and to render support.

‘I would like to encourage practitioners to come back to the institute after they have graduated so that they can polish their skills and learn new ways of doing things, especially the Western way,’ said Dlamini.

Multiple Sclerosis is thought to be a autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. In MS myelin is lost in multiple areas, leaving scar tissue called sclerosis. These damaged areas are also known as plaques or lesions. Sometimes the nerve fiber itself is damaged or broken.

Although there is still no cure for MS there are various strategies available to modify the disease course. treat exacerbations, manage systems, and improve function and safety. In combination, these treatments enhance the quality of life for people living with MS.

Sativex is an oral spray containing a cannabis extract produced by GW Pharmaceuticals. You take it by spraying it under the tongue or inside the cheeks. Sativex in clinical trials has shown promising results in the relief of spasticity, nerve pain, sleep disturbance, and bladder systems.

Because MS is so variable from person to another and for any one person over time, each individuals treatment needs are best identified in an ongoing collaboration with members of the treatment team.

For more in depth information one can contact the National Multiple Sclerosis Society at www.nationalmssociety.org Please support the society whether its in time, funds or ideas, your help can make a difference.

Cannabis sativa is a herbaceous plant containing more than 60% cannabinoid compounds. Users often smoke Mandrax with a mixture of cannabis and tobacco. This unique south African drug combination is then called a “white pipe”

For a greater “high” solvents are added to low grade cannabis to make it more combustible, this is called a “majat”

Commonly know as “dagga” it is illegal to have it in your possession, but undeniable, South African cannabis facts remain thats it of a high grade and not expensive. Durban poison is the most famous. Grown locally in the hot regions of kwazulu-natal it grows prolifically in poor mountainous soil.

Previously, cannabis use was something that one only ever heard about. It was an activity far removed from our daily lives and we thought of it as something that is only used by reckless, rebellious “drug addicts”

Nowadays, it is a phenomenon that we are confronted with in everyday life. Also known as “boom, weed, hash, ganji, swazi gold, malawi gold, with Durban poison being the best. Being freely available in schools and most neighborhoods dagga has slowly but surely become the latest fashion.

Local “weed” smokers boast often on availability and quality of dagga. Tourists wanting to score local weed are warned they run the risk of getting into trouble with the law. Many come to South Africa to sample some of its exotic, natural produce thus becoming part of the growing cannabis tourism fraternity.

Remember cannabis whether a “bankie” (bank packet) “arm” or only a “matchbox” is illegal to have in your possession no matter how little the quantity.

Until it becomes decriminalized remains to be seen so until then its a criminal offense to buy or be in possession of it.
