Raw sewerage if killing off Zululand ’s fish-breeding grounds, with many thousands of fishes in the Umgeni River’s mangrove breeding grounds being wiped out because raw sewerage is spilling into the river because the electricity blackouts have cut out the local pump stations. More bad news for ecologists near any pump stations is that Durban city has no plans to install back-up generators. That’s according to Durban’s Water and Sanitation head, Neil Macleod, who said it would be prohibitively expensive to install generators at the 160-odd stations that rely entirely on electricity mains. Only about 40 stations have standby generators. http://www.themercury.co.za
