A trade union has revealed that Eskom exports the equivalent of an “entire power station” to SA’s neighbours and that Zimbabwe does not pay for the power it receives.
Information obtained by Solidarity shows that Eskom currently exports 3 000MW of electricity to neighbouring countries. This almost equals the entire output of one SA power station.
This emerged after calls earlier this week for Eskom to disclose exactly how much electricity it supplies to SA’s neighbours and at what rate. Questions were also raised as to whether the countries being supplied are subject to load shedding. The electricity shortage in our country has become so serious that Eskom should seriously consider systematically phasing out electricity supplies to neighbouring countries, while giving these countries the opportunity to find alternative solutions. If it were not for these exports, SA would have had ample electricity reserves for its own needs.
Forget about a nation hoping to host a world soccer event in a few years time. We are talking about today and the story today is one of a nation slowly grinding itself onto the rocks because it cannot see where its going. .
When FIFA announced SA as the host nation for 2010, the leaders of SA were annoyed – to say the least – when FIFA insisted on at least two back-up generators be installed ay each stadium. The government said it was unfair and unnecessary.
I decided to start my quest for info by picking up the phone and calling a few old friends still in monkey land!! The first one was there, but as I later found out, her switchboard was off due to a power cut. Not much good to any business. The next one told me that he was into his second cut of the day. The first was two hours from 2:00pm to 4:00pm the next from 10:00pm till much later that night I guess. South Africa has effectively run out of a reliable electricity supply. This is sad and very hard to believe when you think that until ten or so years ago SA had an electricity utility which was the envy of many a developed nation. Their corporate debt rating was the highest achievable for a non-government issued debt bond. Today this too in in serious question. The management of this once superb organisation has been systematically tampered with, until today it is being run by a cabal of well connected friends and family of the ANC ruling elite. Nepotism and gross incompetency are the root causes of the disaster facing this shambolic African country today.
